The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) has introduced a new category to its Nebula Awards that seeks to recognize writers for outstanding work in video games.
Speaking to GeekWire, SFWA President Cat Rambo explained that attempts to even include game writers in the SFWA took decades. As a result of those efforts, the organization finally opened membership to game writers last year and will introduce a Best Game Writing award to the Nebulas in 2018. “I would think that one of the things a Nebula imprimatur would mean for a game is that it is a game that really has some story to it,” Rambo told GeekWire. “That it’s a game that can achieve that sort of immersive wonderful experience that only text can bring.”
In past years, the Nebula Awards has recognized writers for their strong Science Fiction and Fantasy work in novels, novella, novelette, and short stories. While the website has not yet been updated with details about the 2018 awards, information on the Nebula Awards and SFWA membership can be found on the organization’s website.
